Its co-founders are gene editing pioneer George George Church, a professor of genetics at Harvard University, and technology entrepreneur Ben Lamm. Recently, the company announced that it had raised another $150 million in financing. So far, it has raised $225 million from a number of investors, including the American Innovation and Technology Fund, Breyer Capital and In-Q-Tel.

It is reported that Colossal has set up a special team to study genetic technology related to birds. Reviving the dodo is not expected to make money for the company, but genetic tools and devices developed to try to do so may have other uses, including for human health, the company said. For example, Colossal Biosciences is now testing tools that alter several parts of the genome at the same time, and is also working on a technology called "artificial uterus".

Some scientists have questioned that it is not a good idea to try to revive extinct species, which they believe will take up attention and money to save biological species.

CTOnews.com learned that the dodo, once inhabited by the Indian Ocean island of the Republic of Mauritius (The Republic of Mauritius), was hunted and killed in the 1500s and 2000s and became extinct in the 1660s (around 1662 and 1693). This is the first recorded creature in human history to become extinct due to human activities, and it is also one of the most famous extinct animals except dinosaurs.
