Lumix S1 / S1R was unveiled on September 25, 2018 and officially released on February 1, 2019. They are Panasonic's first full-frame micro-single cameras, which are also known as micro-single giants or "giant single" because of their large size and considerable weight.

After the debut of S1 / S1R, Panasonic launched S1H (and box camera BS1H) and S5 with high performance-to-price ratio. In January 2023, the S5II / S5IIX with phase focusing officially made its debut, bringing the sound volume of Panasonic's full-width microphone to a new level.

S1 / S1R has very similar configurations and functions: S1R does not abandon 4K60p video because of its high pixels (5K30p and HLG have been added after the firmware update), and S1 does not support in-machine synthesis of high-resolution photos (commonly known as "rock music") because of its low pixels. Other things like 5-axis anti-shake, 5.76 million-point EVF, 3-axis tilted LCD screen, backlit buttons, magnesium alloy body, full-size HDMI interface, 27W fast charging (and support for real charging while using) are all the same, as Panasonic's first full-frame products are full of sincerity.

▲ 3-axis tilt LCD screen, but Panasonic S1 / S1R shortcomings are also obvious: the body is really too bulky, about 1017g standard weight even exceeds Canon 5D4, Nikon D850 and many other digital SLR. Coupled with the old problems of autofocus and the immature L card lens group at that time, it did not make much waves in the mainstream market.

Now looking back at the S1 / S1R, it looks a bit like Panasonic's product for Leica (the overall style is similar to SL and the configuration corresponds to SL2-S / SL2), and then the S5 is the microorder Panasonic wants to do. In any case, fortunately, Panasonic adjusted the product direction in time and finally occupied a place in the full micro-single market. Today, S5II and S5IIX can be said to have the best reputation in history. I hope to make continuous efforts to add some vitality to this dreary market pattern.

In the past few years, Panasonic has made several firmware upgrades for S1 / S1R, resulting in significant improvements in focus, video, and handling. Unfortunately, most of the reviews were released between 2020 and 2021 and did not reflect these new features.
