But a recent paper by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Nature uses vertically stacked MicroLED technology to boost pixel density to 5000 PPI.

The study was led by Jeehwan Kim, an engineering professor who specializes in making ultra-thin, high-performance films. Based on past scientific research, the team made red, green and blue sub-pixel films on two-dimensional membrane materials.

CTOnews.com learned that the films were then stripped off the rigid substrate and stacked together to form vertical full-color pixels only 4 microns wide.

"this is the smallest microLED pixel and the highest pixel density reported in the journal," Jeehwan Kim said. Stacking colors is only the first step. The team's in-depth research found that by changing the input voltage, they were able to produce multiple colors in each stacked pixel. Just want to control 25 million independent LED, you need a complete system. This is also one of the future development directions of the team.
