These tests, carried out by the Rolls-Royce Power Systems Division, show fairly good efficiency, performance, emissions and combustion performance.

Luo Luo Power system said that this engine will meet the market demand for hydrogen energy solutions in the general trend of energy transformation, and provide reliable and clean power for customers' generator sets and thermoelectric power plants.

As part of the climate-neutral energy supply for the new container terminal, the company plans to deploy mtu engines running on 100% hydrogen fuel for the first time in the enerPort II lighthouse project in Duisburg, Germany.

According to Luo Luo Power system, hydrogen energy can be used both to store excess energy and as fuel, not only for engines, but also for fuel cells and thermoelectric power plants to produce climate-neutral electricity and heat. For example, when electricity demand is low and wind or solar energy produces large amounts of renewable energy, excess energy can be diverted into electrolytic hydrogen production equipment, converting water into hydrogen, which can then be used as fuel for a range of applications.

CTOnews.com learned that Roro Power Systems has conducted several months of bench testing of mtu gas engines running on 100% hydrogen fuel, continuously improving efficiency, performance, emissions and combustion performance. With green hydrogen as fuel, these mtu engines will be able to operate in a carbon dioxide-neutral manner in the future. For gas engines that have been put into operation, Luo Luo Power system can provide a conversion kit as a solution.

Considering the different combustion methods of hydrogen and natural gas, the company has made changes to some engine components of the test engine, including fuel injection, turbocharging, piston design and control. However, hydrogen fuel engine development has been promoted quickly and efficiently through the use of proven technologies in the Luo Luo powertrain portfolio, such as mtu turbochargers, fuel injection valves, engine electronics and control systems.

Duisburg, one of the world's largest inland ports, is currently working with several partners to build a hydrogen-based network for its new terminal, which is expected to be operational in 2024. In the future, most of the electricity needed by the port itself will be produced directly from hydrogen in a carbon dioxide neutral manner on the site. This process is achieved through two thermoelectric twin power plants equipped with mtu 4000 series hydrogen fuel engines with a total installed capacity of 2MW and three mtu fuel cell systems with a total installed capacity of 1.5MW.
