Beijing, February 3 (Xinhua)-- IT industry leaders are worried that the famous artificial intelligence chat robot ChatGPT has been used by hackers to plan cyber attacks.

A Black Berry report surveyed 500UK IT industry policy makers' views on ChatGPT's revolutionary technology and found that more than 3/4 (76 per cent) thought foreign countries had used ChatGPT in cyber wars against other countries. Nearly half (48 per cent) believe that there will be "successful" cyber attacks caused by malicious use of ChatGPT in 2023.

While this sounds like malicious speculation about artificial intelligence, it is far from true. The majority of respondents (60 per cent) still believe that the technology will be used for "good" purposes, but at the same time, 72 per cent are still worried about the potential abuse of ChatGPT.

What worries them most is that cyber criminals use artificial intelligence chatbots to forge trusted phishing emails (57%), increase the complexity of attacks (51%), and accelerate new social network attacks (49%). Another 49 per cent believe that ChatGPT can be used to spread error messages and even become a "good tool" for hackers to upgrade and acquire new skills.

But if artificial intelligence can be used for offense, then relatively, it can also be used for defense. That's why nearly 4/5 (78%) of respondents plan to invest in artificial intelligence-driven cyber security over the next two years, and 44% of them plan to do so this year. It is worth mentioning that almost everyone (88%) wants the government to step in and regulate the use of the technology.

There is ample evidence that some malicious people are "testing the waters", and we expect hackers this year to learn how to successfully use ChatGPT for their evil purposes, whether as a tool to write better malware (open in a new tag) or as a tool to support their 'skill set'. Network experts and hackers will continue to study how to make the best use of ChatGPT, and time will tell who is more efficient.
