According to CTOnews.com, February 3, many users choose to use external webcams and many others use their mobile phones as webcams, but this requires the installation of third-party apps. Now Google may be working on a way to turn a user's Android phone into a plug-and-play USB webcam.

Mishaal Rahman, which often analyzes Android, revealed on Twitter today that Google may increase its support for turning Android phones into USB webcams. Rahman found some data in the Android open source project (AOSP) warehouse, indicating that Android is adding "DeviceAsWebcam" services.

The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) is a native Android open source operating system development project maintained by Google that allows anyone to review and contribute code and patches under Google's guidance and supervision.

The "DeviceAsWebcam" service is described as "a new service that turns Android devices into webcams". As Rahman explains, this will work on Android devices that support the standard UVC (USB Video Class) gadget mode, which allows video data to be sent.

CTOnews.com learned that turning a phone into a webcam is not new, and as mentioned earlier, there are some apps that can do this. But it will be the first time Android has native support to turn a phone into a UVC gadget without the help of a third-party app.

Whether Google has decided to include this feature in future operating system updates is unclear, but to use the new feature now, Rahman points out that the device's kernel may need to be compiled with CONFIG_USB_CONFIGFS_F_UVC=y, and technically an application or service is still needed to work.
