Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen OC_Formula for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, February 2, according to TheElec, the coolant market for semiconductor production is expected to change dramatically in the next two to three years. This is because 3M, the world's largest coolant manufacturer, has announced that it will stop producing coolant by 2025 in accordance with environmental regulations.

The coolant is used to absorb indoor heat during wafer etching. Different coolants are used depending on the way the chipmaker controls the temperature.

The coolants used in refrigerators are the main cooling products because they are relatively energy efficient and can control temperature over a wide range.

But the recent adoption of stricter regulations to protect the environment has raised concerns about the use of coolant, which may become a pollutant.

Us 3M dominates the chip coolant market with a 90 per cent market share; the second largest producer is Solvay, a Belgian company.

CTOnews.com learned that in March last year, the Belgian government ordered 3M to stop operating its coolant plant in Flanders because it failed to meet higher PFAS emission standards. PFAS, perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are used to make coolants and are known to be harmful to the environment.

Initially, 3M tried to find a solution that uses less PFAS, but at the end of last year it announced that it would stop production of PFAS completely by the end of 2025.

So far, South Korean chipmakers Samsung and SK Hynix have relied heavily on 3M's coolant supply to produce chips.

Sources say they are expected to find alternative solutions, such as using electric water chillers that use less coolant than refrigerator water chillers.

They added that consideration would also be given to the use of gas-cooled substances with no coolant at all.
