Beijing time on February 3 morning news, Amazon today released the company's fiscal year 2022 fourth quarter and full year earnings. The report shows that Amazon's net sales in the fourth quarter were $149.204 billion, up 9% from $137.412 billion a year earlier, excluding the impact of exchange rate changes, up 12% year-on-year; net profit was $278 million, down 98% from $14.323 billion a year earlier; Diluted earnings per share were $0.03, compared to $1.39 per diluted share for the same period a year ago.
Amazon's fourth-quarter revenue beat expectations, but earnings per share missed Wall Street analysts 'expectations and the company's outlook for net sales in the first quarter of fiscal 2023 missed expectations, sending its after-hours share price down nearly 5%.
Key results for the fourth quarter: amazon's net income for the quarter ended december 31 was $278 million, or $0.03 per diluted share, which was significantly lower than a year earlier. Amazon's net income for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2021 was $14.323 billion, or diluted earnings per share of $1.39. Amazon's fourth-quarter net income included a pre-tax valuation loss of $2.3 billion from non-operating income (expenses) from Rivian Automotive's common stock investment, compared with a pre-tax valuation gain of $11.8 billion from this investment in the fourth quarter of 2021.
Amazon's fourth-quarter operating profit was $2.737 billion, compared with $3.460 billion a year earlier.

According to Yahoo Finance statistics, 36 analysts had expected Amazon's fourth-quarter earnings per share to reach $0.17, and 37 analysts expected Amazon's fourth-quarter net sales to reach $145.42 billion.
Cash flow data: Amazon's operating cash flow for the 12 months ended December 31, 2022 was $46.8 billion, up 1% from the same period last year; Amazon's operating cash flow for the 12 months ended December 31, 2021 was $46.3 billion.
Amazon's free cash flow for the 12 months ended December 31, 2022 was $11.6 billion, up from a year earlier; Amazon's free cash flow for the 12 months ended December 31, 2021 was $9.1 billion.
Amazon's free cash flow over the past 12 months, after deducting lease principal payments, was $19.8 billion, down from a year earlier; Amazon's free cash flow after deducting the aforementioned items was $20.4 billion for the 12 months ended Dec.31,2021.
After deducting principal payments on finance leases and assets acquired under capital leases, Amazon's free cash flow over the past 12 months was $12.8 billion, which was lower than a year earlier; Amazon's free cash flow after deducting the aforementioned items was $14.3 billion for the 12 months ended December 31, 2021.
FINANCIAL ANALYSIS FOR THE FOURTH QUARTER: Amazon's net sales for the fourth quarter were $149.204 billion, up 9% from $137.412 billion a year earlier. Excluding the negative impact of $5 billion from currency movements, amazon's net sales rose 12% in the fourth quarter from a year earlier.
Amazon's fourth-quarter net sales of products were $70.531 billion, compared with $71.416 billion a year earlier; net sales of services were $78.673 billion, compared with $65.996 billion a year earlier.
In October, Amazon forecast net sales for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2022 to be between $140 billion and $148 billion, up 2% to 8% from a year earlier, including about 460 basis points of expected negative impact from currency movements, averaging $144 billion, less than analysts expected at the time. Amazon also projected operating profit of between zero and $4 billion for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2022, compared with operating profit of $3.5 billion for the same period in fiscal 2021.
By geography: Amazon North America (U.S., Canada) net sales for the fourth quarter were $93.363 billion, up 13% from $82.360 billion a year earlier, up 14% from a year earlier excluding currency changes; operating losses were $240 million, compared with operating losses of $206 million a year earlier, up 17% from a year earlier.
Amazon International (UK, Germany, France, Japan and China) reported net sales of $34.463 billion in the fourth quarter, down 8% from $37.272 billion in the same period last year, up 5% year-over-year excluding currency movements; operating losses were $2.228 billion, compared with $1.627 billion in the same period last year, up 37% year-over-year.
Amazon AWS Cloud Services net sales for the fourth quarter were $21.378 billion, up 20% from $17.780 billion a year earlier and up 20% from a year earlier, excluding currency changes; operating profit was $5.205 billion, down 2% from $5.293 billion a year earlier.
Sales from Amazon's North American division accounted for 63% of total sales in the fourth quarter, compared to 60% a year earlier; sales from the international division accounted for 23% of total sales, compared to 27% a year earlier; and sales from AWS cloud services accounted for 14% of total sales, compared to 13% a year earlier.
By service and business type: Amazon's net sales from online stores in the fourth quarter were $64.531 billion, down 2% from $66.075 billion a year earlier, and up 2% from a year earlier excluding currency changes.
Net sales from physical stores were US$4.957 billion, up 6% from US$4.688 billion in the same period last year, excluding the impact of exchange rate changes.
Net sales from third-party seller services were $36.339 billion, up 20% from $30.320 billion a year earlier, and up 24% year-over-year excluding currency movements.
Net sales from subscription services were $9.189 billion, up 13% from $8.123 billion a year earlier, and up 17% from a year earlier excluding currency movements;
Revenue from advertising services was $11.557 billion, up 19% from $9.716 billion a year earlier, and up 23% from a year earlier excluding currency movements.
Net sales from AWS cloud services were $21.378 billion, up 20% from $17.780 billion in the same period last year, excluding the impact of exchange rate changes.
Net sales from other businesses were $1.253 billion, up 77% from $710 million a year earlier and 80% year-over-year excluding currency movements.
Key results for fiscal year 2022: Amazon's net sales for the entire fiscal year 2022 were $514 billion, up 9% from $469.8 billion in fiscal year 2021; excluding the negative impact of currency movements of $15.5 billion, Amazon's net sales for fiscal year 2022 increased 13% year-on-year. Among them, Amazon's North American sales in fiscal year 2022 were $315.9 billion, up 13% from fiscal year 2021; international sales were $118 billion, down 8% from fiscal year 2021, up 4% year-on-year excluding exchange rate changes;AWS sales were $80.1 billion, up 29% from fiscal year 2021.
Amazon's operating profit for fiscal 2022 was $12.2 billion, compared with $24.9 billion in fiscal 2021. Among them, Amazon's North American business had an operating loss of $2.8 billion in fiscal 2022, compared with an operating profit of $7.3 billion in fiscal 2021; an operating loss of $7.7 billion in international business, compared with an operating loss of $900 million in fiscal 2021; and an operating profit of $22.8 billion in AWS business, compared with an operating profit of $18.5 billion in fiscal 2021.
Amazon's net loss for fiscal 2022 was $2.7 billion, or $0.27 per diluted share, compared with net income of $33.4 billion, or $3.24 per diluted share, for fiscal 2021. Amazon's net loss for fiscal 2022 included a pre-tax valuation loss of $12.7 billion from non-operating income (expenses) from Rivian Automotive's common stock investment, compared with a pre-tax valuation gain of $11.8 billion from this investment in fiscal 2021.
Amazon's fiscal 2022 net sales exceeded Wall Street analysts 'expectations, but its diluted loss per share performance was worse than expected. According to data provided by Yahoo Finance Channel, 46 analysts had expected Amazon's net sales in fiscal 2022 to reach $510.24 billion on average, and 37 analysts had expected Amazon's diluted loss per share in fiscal 2022 to reach $0.12 on average.
Outlook: Amazon expects net sales for the first quarter of fiscal 2023 to be between $121 billion and $126 billion, up 4% to 8% year-over-year, including the expected negative impact of currency movements of approximately 210 basis points.
Amazon also expects operating profit for the first quarter of fiscal 2023 to be between $0 billion and $4 billion, compared with $3.7 billion for the same period in fiscal 2021.
Amazon missed analysts 'expectations with a median of $123.5 billion for first-quarter net sales. According to Yahoo Finance statistics, 28 analysts had expected Amazon's net sales in the first quarter to reach $125.11 billion on average.
Share price changes: Amazon shares rose $7.76, or 7.38%, to close at $112.91 in regular NASDA trading. Amazon shares fell $5.40, or 4.78 percent, to $107.51 in after-hours trading ending at 4:34 p.m. ET Thursday (5:34 a.m. Beijing time Friday). Over the past 52 weeks, Amazon's highest price was $170.83 and its lowest price was $81.43.
