The HEPS storage ring is an ultra-low emittance electron ring accelerator, which is used for electron third-stage acceleration and produces synchrotron radiation at the same time. The electron beam energy is 6 gigabytes, the horizontal natural emittance is better than 60 pico-meter radians, and the beam circumference is about 1360.4 meters. It is the third largest light source accelerator in the world and the largest accelerator in China, with an area of about 20 football fields. As an important part of the device, the HEPS storage ring consists of 48 improved hybrid 7BA (7 bend iron dispersion elimination) magnetic focusing structure cycles, each cycle length is about 28 meters, including 37 magnets and brackets, vacuum, beam diagnosis and other hardware equipment. According to the installation requirements and magnet distribution, each structural cycle is divided into 6 pre-installed collimating units with different lengths of 3 to 4 meters.
In order to ensure the beam accuracy, after the processing and testing of each system equipment, the precollimation unit assembly, equipment temperature setting, bracket calibration, leveling and locking, initial comprehensive measurement, determination of reference magnet, fine adjustment and locking of each iron, and further comprehensive measurement will be completed in the laboratory, so that the placement accuracy of the magnet on the bracket of the precollimation unit is better than 30 microns, and then transported to the storage ring tunnel for installation. Qu Huamin, chief engineer of the HEPS project, said that the storage ring tunnel is densely equipped with a total of 288 precollimation units, including 1776 magnets, 602 beam position detectors (BPM), and 1340 vacuum boxes, in the tunnel with a perimeter of more than 1300 meters. The positioning accuracy between the adjacent units needs to reach 50 microns, and the installation and collimation of the equipment are facing great difficulties. In order to complete the installation task better, the storage ring equipment development and installation team organizes the process installation experiment as early as possible, checks the equipment interface relationship, installation and operation space, verifies the collimation measurement scheme, and confirms the batch installation process, which lays the foundation for the pre-installation and alignment of the storage ring batch unit and the precise installation of the tunnel.
CTOnews.com learned that HEPS, as the core facility of the major science and technology infrastructure cluster of Huairou Science City jointly built by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Beijing, was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission and built by the Institute of High Energy of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. When completed, it will become one of the fourth-generation synchrotron radiation sources with the lowest emittance and highest brightness in the world, and will provide a technical support platform for the country's major strategic needs and cutting-edge basic scientific research. The HEPS device is mainly composed of an accelerator, a beam line and an experimental station. at present, the capital construction package has passed the completion acceptance, the linear accelerator has completed the equipment installation and debugging, the intensifier has been fully connected, the beam station hut has been started and installed, and HEPS has entered the installation stage of scientific research equipment in an all-round way.
Pan Weimin, director of the HEPS project, said that the official start of the installation of HEPS storage ring tunnel equipment is a new starting point for HEPS to move forward rapidly, marking the beginning of the installation of more and more sophisticated equipment for HEPS accelerators, and HEPS has entered a broader and deeper stage, which is also a great challenge for our project participants. The testing and pre-collimation of HEPS equipment are carried out in the Advanced Light Source Technology Development and testing platform (PAPS). PAPS is one of the first cross-research platform projects jointly supported by Beijing and the Chinese Academy of Sciences to be built in Huairou Science City. It closely revolves around the construction and open operation of a series of high-level light source devices in China, and carries out the research and development of core technology prospectively and systematically, providing strong technical support and guarantee for the construction, operation and continuous improvement of advanced light sources in our country.
