CTOnews.com, February 1-Samsung has won a design patent for foldable devices, according to a list released by the U.S. Trademark and Patent Office (USPTO) earlier this month. Samsung has explored a variety of possibilities for folding devices in its patents, allowing devices to play with all sorts of tricks like origami.

Samsung shows a variety of folding schemes such as single fold / double fold / forward fold / refold, and can provide up to 6 panels. And the patent also combines folding and sliding solutions, which means Samsung can bring richer and more personalized device solutions to users.

CTOnews.com learned that in Patent figure 5, Samsung showed 11 foldable solutions. In addition to the more conventional folding schemes, double folding schemes similar to origami are integrated in (I) and (k), which can be folded in half after the screen is folded.

A sliding solution is shown in patent figure 6 in the form of a slidable / expandable display that can increase the display size when you need to view larger content or video.

Although these patents show very innovative folding solutions, there are still many technical challenges to overcome if they are to be truly commercialized, and even the average consumer on the market cannot afford it.
