CTOnews.com The Xfce 4.20 desktop environment is still in the early stages of development, but the official team says it can support the next generation Wayland display protocol by introducing a new libxfce4 windows dependency.

The Xfce development team released the libxfce4 windows library earlier this month and started migrating the Xfce desktop manager xfdesktop to Wayland. The Xfce development team is still refining the libxfce4 windows library, so Wayland is only initially supported.

Xfce's panel (xfce4-panel) also began migrating to Wayland at the same time. The Xfce team also fixed a number of bugs in the xfce4-panel, cleaned up redundant code, and improved task lists, window menus, clocks, and other components.

CTOnews.com understands that Xfce 4.20 is expected to be officially released at the end of 2024, when Wayland will likely be fully supported.
