CTOnews.com, February 1, according to the Wall Street Journal, General Motors will invest $650 million (currently about 4.394 billion yuan) in Lithium Americas and will jointly develop a large lithium mine in Nevada.

In a joint statement on Tuesday, the two companies said they would develop the Thacker Pass mine. This is the largest known lithium mine in the United States and one of the largest in the world.

Lithium carbonate will be extracted from the mine and used in proprietary batteries used by General Motors in its range of electric vehicles. Lithium Americas estimates that the lithium extracted and processed at the mine could support the production of up to 1 million electric vehicles a year.

CTOnews.com has learned that the two companies are expected to start production in the second half of 2026 and that GM will gain exclusive production rights for the first phase through a binding supply agreement and priority for second-stage production.
