CTOnews.com, February 1 (Reuters)-EU industry chief Thierry Breton told Twitter boss Elon Musk that the coming months will be crucial for Twitter to fulfill its commitment to fully comply with EU online content rules. The comments added to the pressure on Twitter amid fears that it might not meet compliance standards.

Two months ago, the two men had a video call in which Breton warned Mr Musk that Twitter had "a lot of work to do" to implement a transparent use policy, significantly strengthen content censorship and protect freedom of expression.

These requirements were set out in the EU Digital Services Act (DSA), which came into force in November last year. The bill targets online platforms, which could face fines of up to 6 per cent of global turnover if they fail to comply fully by September 1, 2023.

CTOnews.com has learned that Mr Musk has cut thousands of jobs since taking over Twitter, raising concerns about whether Twitter will be able to meet its obligations under DSA.

"I note that Twitter is committed to following the DSA path in Europe," Breton said after another video call with Mr Musk on Tuesday. The next few months will be the key to turning that promise into reality. " Breton says it needs to see progress in full compliance with DSA, and the team will closely monitor the work of Twitter and all other online platforms.

In response, Musk said on Twitter that he had a pleasant meeting with Breton, and that DSA's goals of transparency, accountability and accurate information are in line with Twitter's goals.
