Tesla confirmed in regulatory filings on Tuesday that the U.S. Department of Justice had asked the company to provide documents related to advanced driving assistance systems after a criminal investigation.

Tesla said in a regulatory filing released Tuesday that the U.S. Department of Justice asked it for information about Autopilot, a system that helps owners complete tasks such as steering and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles on highways.

Foreign media previously reported that the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission are investigating whether Tesla misled consumers and investors about Autopilot's performance. Federal prosecutors are reviewing statements by Tesla and its executives about Autopilot's safety and functionality. The Justice Department criminal investigation involves authorities in Washington and San Francisco.

Tesla said in the regulatory filing: "To our knowledge, no government agency has concluded that (we) committed any wrongdoing in any ongoing investigation. Tesla added that it cannot predict the outcome of any ongoing matter and that "our business, operating results, prospects, cash flow and financial position could be materially and adversely affected if the government decides to take enforcement action."

Tesla has previously said it is safer to drive with Autopilot than without it. Tesla says its internal data shows accidents are less common when owners use Autopilot. However, some researchers have criticized Tesla's methods.

Tesla declined to comment. The Justice Department declined to comment. Tesla shares rose 3.9 percent on Tuesday and are up 41 percent this year. Tesla shares plunged 65% last year, the biggest annual decline in history.
