Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, Feb. 1 / PRNewswire-Asianet /-- artificial intelligence research startup OpenAI launched a tool on Tuesday to figure out whether the text was written by a human or a computer.
OpenAI is the company behind ChatGPT, and ChatGPT is a chat robot that can generate text that looks like human writing on prompts and quickly became popular after it was released two months ago. Last week Microsoft announced a multibillion-dollar investment in OpenAI and said it would incorporate the start-up's artificial intelligence model into its products for consumers and businesses.
Since ChatGPT's debut in November, some of the largest school districts in the United States, including New York City, have banned the artificial intelligence chat robots for fear that students will use text generators to cheat or plagiarize.
Sam Altman, chief executive of OpenAI, says education has changed in the past after the advent of technologies such as calculators, but he also said the company may have ways to help teachers find texts written by artificial intelligence.
OpenAI's new tool is not perfect. The company says it is still in the process of development and optimization and may make mistakes in its use. " In our assessment of the 'challenge set' of English texts, our classifier correctly identified 26 per cent of AI-written texts (true positives) as' may be AI-written', while 9 per cent of human-written texts were mistakenly marked as AI-written (false positive), "OpenAI staff wrote.
The new tool is unreliable in analyzing articles that contain less than 1000 characters, and OpenAI does not recommend it for languages other than English. In addition, the text from artificial intelligence can be slightly updated, which will make the classifier unable to correctly judge that it is not a human work.
OpenAI says it is in contact with educators to discuss the capabilities and limitations of ChatGPT and will continue to work on testing text generated by AI.
CTOnews.com learned that as early as 2019, OpenAI made it clear that it was not easy to identify text synthesized by artificial intelligence. OpenAI staff said: "our work on detecting text generated by artificial intelligence will continue, and we hope to share improved methods in the future."
