Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, January 31 (Xinhua) Western Digital on Monday launched its first dual-drive mechanical hard drive (HDD), which competes with rival Seagate's Exos series of hard drives.
In fact, the mechanical hard disk is mainly an electronic memory composed of three large parts-the drive motor, the head + drive arm and the disk, while Seagate innovatively introduced multi-drive motor (Multi-Actuator) technology, thus doubling the HDD performance.
This dual-drive HDD is based on the classic ultrstar DC HC560, but its sequential read and write speed doubles and its random performance almost doubles, making it suitable for very large cloud data centers.
Simply put, two separate drives in this mechanical hard disk work in parallel, resulting in twice the sequential throughput (582MB/s), comparable to SATA SSD, and 1.7 times better than the random performance of a single-drive HDD (still not comparable to SSD).
Xisu claims that the drive consumes up to 37% less power than two separate hard drives, but it did not release detailed specifications of the product.
CTOnews.com query found that the Western Digital Ultrastar DC HS760 20TB dual drive uses Western Digital's third-generation OptiNAND platform, with nine 2.2TB ePMR (energy-assisted vertical magnetic recording technology) disks and NAND flash memory as a cache, thus improving performance.
It is worth mentioning that this hard drive uses a single SAS interface, but after getting on the computer, it is displayed as two 10TB logical unit numbers (LUN) SAS devices, so software adjustment is also needed on the host side. Therefore, not all data centers can use this hard drive.
Like Western Digital's other ultrstar hard drives, DC HS760 20TB also has a five-year warranty and can work 24 / 7, with each LUN handling up to 500TB data per year, slightly less than competitive's annual 550TB workload.
With regard to pricing, Western Digital did not disclose its specific pricing because it is not a retail product, but it will certainly be more expensive than a single-drive hard drive.
