Renesas has introduced the Wi-Fi 6amp 6e quad-band extender, an extended wireless signal that provides high coverage and performance solutions for single-channel AP (router), multi-channel AP (mesh network) scenarios and all-band usage scenarios.

According to the official website of Renesas, the main control chip used in the expander is the CORTINA CA8289 of quad-core ARM Cortex-A55.

In the aspect of Wi-Fi expansion, first of all, a WiFi 6e chip CL8066 is used, which only needs two PCIe interfaces to support a total of 14 RF chains to achieve flexible MIMO allocation. For example, a three-band solution can be implemented, each band (2.4GHz, 5GHz, 6GHz) supports 4 × 4 MIMO, plus a dedicated fourth monitoring RF circuit, using up to two received radio frequency chains for parallel spectrum analysis, Zero-Wait-DFS, Zero-Wait-CAC, beacon analysis and packet snooping to achieve fast and efficient spectrum scanning and channel characteristic analysis.

Secondly, the WiFi 6 chip uses CL8060, a chip with an antenna device that can work together in the 5G low band and the 5G high band.

Then it uses DA14531 BLE 5.1ultra-low power Bluetooth SoC, which is the smallest chip with the highest power efficiency. It has built-in PCB onboard antennas and supports external antennas, which simplifies the development of Bluetooth products, promotes the wider application of Bluetooth low power (BLE) connection technology, and greatly reduces the cost of adding Bluetooth low power connection to any system. It has a wide range of applications, including health medical devices, wireless POS machines, smart wearable devices, HID devices (man-machine interface devices) and industrial sensors and controls.

DA14531 integrates 2.4GHz transceivers and Arm Cortex-M0 + microcontrollers with 48kB RAM and 32kB one-time programmable (OTP) memory. It can be used as a stand-alone application processor or as a data pump in a managed system.

CTOnews.com learned that the function of the WiFi extender is to enhance the WiFi signal and expand its working range. Renesas's Wi-Fi 6amp 6e quad-band extender architecture enables the expansion of 2.4GHz+5GHz low + 5GHz high + 6GHz (four bands) or 2.4GHz+5GHz+6GHz + listening chain (three bands +). Its dynamic backhaul is more than 6 or 5.H (including 5.9GHz) band, powerful; integrated 2 transceivers / radios, a single package size of 11mm × 11mm, space saving and power consumption advantage, about 30% lower than similar products.

This quad-band extender supports both Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6e, and provides up to 3x improvements in some single-client / multi-client test scenarios.
