Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com January 30 news, the main new features introduced by iOS 16.3, iPadOS 16.3, and macOS 13.2 are physical security keys that support Apple ID accounts. Apple said the optional security features were designed for individuals who want "additional protection against targeted attacks such as phishing or social fraud". When enabled, logging in to Apple ID requires entering the user's account password and then using the FIDO authenticated security key to complete two-factor authentication instead of the traditional six-digit authentication code from another Apple device.
Users who enable this feature must be careful not to lose their security keys, as this may result in permanent loss of access to the Apple ID account. Therefore, the user must set at least two security keys, with a total of up to six. Apple recommends keeping security keys in multiple locations. For example, you can hide your security key somewhere in your home as an alternative solution.
Recently, Apple officially brought recommended physical security keys for iPhone, iPad and Mac. At least two FIDO-certified security keys are required to enable them on Apple devices.
Apple does not have its own physical key. Instead, it makes iPhone, iPad, and Mac compatible with existing FIDO authentication security keys. CTOnews.com learned that in a support document, Apple recommended three specific physical security keys and gave the green light to other keys that met some criteria.
The recommended physical security keys are as follows:
YubiKey 5C NFC-- is $55 each (for most iPhone and Mac via USB-C and NFC)
YubiKey 5Cimuri-$75 each (available for all iPhone and most Mac via Lightning and USB-C)
FEITAN ePass K9 NFC USB-A-$25 each (for older Mac via USB-An and for most iPhone via NFC)
For other recommended security keys, Apple says it needs to ensure that they are authenticated by FIDO and, of course, to provide connectivity for Apple devices. For example, the following USB-C and NFC options:
GoTrust Idem Key USB-C and NFC-$35 each (for most iPhone and Mac)
Apple points out that NFC for security keys is only available for iPhone (iPhone 6 and newer models). USB-C works for most Mac and the latest iPad,USB-A works for older Mac (or iPhone / iPad with Lightning adapters), while Lightning works for iPhone and supported iPad.
It is important to note that the security key does not work in four cases:
Unable to log in to iCloud for Windows.
You cannot log in on older devices that cannot be updated to a version of the software that supports security keys.
Children's accounts and managed Apple ID are not supported.
Apple Watch paired with family member iPhone is not supported. To use the security key, first set up your watch with your own iPhone.
Here's everything you need to use an Apple ID security key:
At least two FIDO certified security keys to connect to Apple devices
IOS 16.3, iPadOS 16.3, or macOS Ventura 13.2 or later on all devices logged in using Apple ID
Set up dual authentication for Apple ID
Modern Web browsers-if you cannot log in to the network using a security key, update your browser to the latest version or try another browser
To log in to Apple Watch, Apple TV, or HomePod after setting a security key, you need an iPhone or iPad with a version of the software that supports the security key
