Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, January 30, according to an Omdia research report, total shipments of Mini LED backlit LCD TVs in 2022 are expected to be 3 million, lower than Omdia's previous forecast. Omdia also lowered its forecast for shipments in 2023.
The decline in demand in the segment of high-end televisions is the main reason for the downgrade. Another key factor is competition from WOLED and QD OLED TV. At the same time, shipments of Mini LED backlit IT display panels remained stable, thanks to its use in Apple products.
Shipments of Mini LED backlit TVs in 2021 are close to 2 million units, four times the number in 2020, the report said. This positive performance encouraged many TV manufacturers to increase their shipments of Mini LED backlit TVs in early 2022.
However, the final shipments at the end of 2022 were disappointing. Total shipments of Mini LED backlit LCD TVs in 2022 are expected to be 3.1 million. Samsung has increased its shipments in this area to more than 2 million. However, shipments of TCL and LG have not increased. In addition, new manufacturers such as Sony and Hisense have only achieved a slight increase in shipments of Mini LED backlit televisions.
The main reason for the lower forecast of shipments must be the decline in demand in the segment of high-end televisions. CTOnews.com learned that sales of high-end televisions by many TV makers have been hit hard by the global recession. Shipments of OLED TVs remained at 7.4 million in 2022, almost the same as in 2021. Samsung plans to increase its shipments of QD OLED TVs in 2023, hoping that the technology will give it a unique competitive advantage. As the Mini LED backlit panel competes with the OLED panel in the high-end TV field, while Samsung Mini LED backlit TV shipments have always maintained the first share, so Samsung's move will seriously affect the Mini LED backlit TV market.
In view of this, Omdia lowered its forecast for shipments of Mini LED backlit TVs: previously, shipments of Mini LED backlit TVs were expected to exceed 10 million units in 2023. Now, that number has been revised down to only 5.7 million. By 2026, shipments are expected to reach 20 million, also lower than the previous forecast of 26 million.
Meanwhile, shipments of Mini LED backlit IT display panels in 2022 are expected to be 1580 million. Shipments in 2021 were 1430 million, compared with Omdia's forecast of 1680 million in 2022. This can be said to be a stable forecast, not as sharply reduced as the TV shipments forecast.
More than 90% of Mini LED backlit IT display panel shipments are used in Apple products, such as 12.9-inch iPad Pro and 14.2-inch and 16.2-inch MacBook Pro. The recession and global supply chain problems have had relatively little impact on Apple. In addition, Apple's delay in the introduction of OLED panels in its products has also helped stabilize demand for Mini LED backlit IT displays.
However, Apple is likely to adopt the OLED panel in its iPad in 2024 and extend it to MacBook in 2026. As Apple adopts OLED panels, demand for Mini LED backlit panels for tablets and laptops is likely to fade away.
