CTOnews.com, January 30 (Xinhua)-- after a surgeon in the United States successfully transplanted a pig heart into a human, a doctor in Munich said the same operation would be performed in Germany in the next two years, according to iamexpat.

Heart surgeons at a hospital in Munich say they believe it will be possible to replace human hearts with pig hearts in the next two years.

Bruno Reichter, a Munich heart surgeon and head of the university hospital research team, said: "We are in the final stage of our research. Using genetically modified pigs from New Zealand, the team has successfully tested every part of the operation. Some basic elements are still being optimized."

The team selected pigs from New Zealand and genetically modified them to grow to only 70 to 90 kilograms so that their heart was not too big for the human body. Reichter says the baboons his team is currently experimenting with should survive for a year before conducting their first human transplant.

CTOnews.com learned that in January 2022, doctors at a university medical center in Maryland transplanted a pig's heart into David Bennett, a 57-year-old handyman. Bennett survived for two months as a last resort. Doctors carried out the risky operation because of a serious shortage of human organ donation in the United States.

In the past seven months, the Munich team transplanted pig hearts into baboons, and the baboons lived for seven months. But Reichter wants to make sure everything goes well before the first human transplant in Europe. "I've determined that it will be better than it is in Maryland," Reichter added.
