In the latest incident, the emergency services department in the Northern Alps of Nagano Prefecture, Japan, said it received 134 false positives between December 16 and January 23, mainly because the iPhone 14 car accident detection system was triggered incorrectly while skiing.

Overall, Japan's emergency services received a total of 919 calls during the month, meaning that about 100 false positives caused by iPhone's car accident detection function accounted for more than 1/10 of their workload.

In addition, false positives of iPhone car accident detection during winter sports have also been reported in various parts of the United States. Another high incidence of false positives is roller coaster. This may be because the high speeds and crashes involved in these activities can easily be confused by algorithms as driving and accident modes.

CTOnews.com learned that when iPhone thinks there is a car accident, the countdown begins on the user's device before automatically calling the emergency service (with a loud warning alarm), and the user can choose to cancel the process. However, in activities such as a roller coaster or skiing, users may not hear the alarm, so they do not know this is happening and will not cancel the call.

Sources say Apple is working with local emergency services to further alleviate the problem. At the end of December, iOS 16.1.2 released notes that Apple added "crash detection optimization" to the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models.

Of course, in addition to false positives, there are a large number of car accident detection functions that work as expected and help save lives. Just today, ABC reported that iPhone's car accident detection function alerted emergency services to a car accident in Australia, allowing police to arrive at the scene only eight minutes after the accident.
