Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen OC_Formula, Coje_He, Mr. Aviation for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com January 29 news, Intel recently released the fourth quarter earnings report, Revenue of $14 billion, Year-on-year decline of 32%; Net loss of nearly $700 million, Compared with the same period last year net profit of $4.6 billion. Intel shares plunged nearly 10 percent in after-hours trading after the earnings release.

The x86 giant's progress in RISC-V exploration has been suspended for cost-cutting reasons. Intel announced that its Pathfinder for RISC-V exploration project was terminated immediately.

We regret to inform you that Intel will immediately terminate the Intel Pathfinder Program for RISC-V. Since Intel will not provide any additional releases or bug fixes, we encourage you to transition to third-party RISC-V software tools that best meet your development needs.

CTOnews.com understands that Pathfinder for RISC-V is an exploratory project at Intel that began in August 2022 to help accelerate RISC-V chip development by using a unified integrated development environment (IDE) for the industry-standard tool chain. These tools allow users to build RISC-V chips and then run them on FPGAs. Many large RISC-V companies support the program.

It is worth mentioning that Intel and American RISC-V chip design manufacturer SiFive announced the launch of RISC-V development board named HiFive Pro P550 a few days ago, equipped with Intel 4 technology Horse Creek SoC, looks like a good prospect, did not expect a few days later bad news.

Intel said the decision to suspend Pathfinder has no impact on Intel foundry services (IFS) or the Horse Creek development platform. IFS supports chips based on the three main instruction set architectures X86, Arm and RISC-V. Pathfinder is an innovative project from a group at Intel. The lessons learned from this project will help solidify our commitment to advancing the RISC-V specification and building a robust RISC-V software ecosystem."

Intel will also close future investments in its network switching product line, which grew out of its 2019 acquisition of Barefoot Networks. However, the division faces stiff competition from rivals such as broadcom, cisco and nvidia's Mellanox, and its performance has not been stellar, making it an easy target to cut.

Intel CEO Pat Kissinger said Intel is also looking for other cost-cutting targets across the company, which means we may cut costs further in the future.
