Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
Thank CTOnews.com netizens for the delivery of suitcase clues! CTOnews.com, January 29 / PRNewswire-FirstCall-Asianet /-- NASA recently announced that an internal communication error caused the software to time out and that one of the instruments of the James Webb Space Telescope, the near Infrared Imager and the slit Spectrometer (NIRISS), has gone offline.
Due to communication errors, NIRISS has been offline since Sunday, January 15, and NIRISS has been carrying out spectroscopy of exoplanet atmospheres. At present, the instrument cannot be used for scientific observation, and the team is trying to determine why. There is no other indication that there is something wrong with the telescope hardware, and other instruments are in good condition, but the NIRISS instrument is designed to capture light with wavelengths ranging from 0.6 microns (visible red) to 5 microns (medium infrared), and affected scientific observations will be rescheduled.
CTOnews.com learned that under normal circumstances, NIRISS can operate in four different modes: it can be used as a camera when other instruments are occupied by a mission; it can analyze light signals to study the atmosphere of small exoplanets; it can perform high-contrast imaging; and a mode tailored to find distant galaxies.
In January last year, the Weber Telescope reached the Lagrangian point of solar-terrestrial system L2, which is at least 1.5 million kilometers from Earth, and began to put into scientific operation in July of the same year, and began to image a large number of celestial bodies with ultra-clear resolution.
This is not the first accident at the $10 billion space observatory. In May last year, one of the main mirrors of the Weber telescope was obviously damaged by a micrometeoroid, but the team said the optical performance of the telescope still reached twice the minimum requirement. In August last year, the infrared ray instrument (MIRI) in the telescope had a software failure and was suspended in November. In December last year, the attitude control system pointing to the telescope also triggered a software glitch, which took two weeks to put the telescope back into observation.
All the previous problems have been solved, and it is expected that this new problem will be successfully fixed.
