Avatar: The Way of Water has surpassed Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the fourth-highest grossing film of all time, CTOnews.com reported Jan. 29.

Avatar: The Way of Water grossed $2.075 billion worldwide on Friday, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which opened in December 2015, grossed $2.064 billion worldwide.

At present, the Top five films in global box office history are Avatar ($2.92 billion), Avengers 4 ($2.79 billion), Titanic ($2.2 billion), Avatar 2 and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, three of which are directed by Cameron.

Industry insiders point out that Avatar: The Way of Water will need to reach $1.5 billion to break even, and Cameron once said the film needed to "become the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history" to start making money, and it must have reached that point now.

Avatar: The Way of Water was released in mainland China on November 16,2022. It was released for 45 days and grossed 1.633 billion yuan at the mainland box office.

CTOnews.com has learned that Avatar: The Way of Water has also been nominated for the 2023 Oscars for best picture, production design, sound and visual effects.
