CTOnews.com, January 29, according to the website of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, as the only natural satellite on the earth, the moon has an important impact on the earth's ecological environment and human activities. For thousands of years, the interaction between the moon and the earth and the moon has been widely concerned by people.

Researchers from the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shandong University and other domestic and foreign units have used several satellite observation data, including Chang'e-3, to analyze the variation of the position of the plasma top with the lunar phase. the lunar tidal signal was observed in the earth's plasma layer for the first time.

Source: according to the research team on the website of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the most direct impact of the moon on the earth is the tidal effect, of which the most representative is the ocean tide. in addition, lunar tides are frequently observed in different height regions such as the crust, atmosphere and ionosphere. The matter in these regions is dominated by solid, liquid and gas states, in which the characteristics of lunar tide are directly caused by the gravity of the moon, and most of them are dominated by semi-diurnal and semi-lunar cycles. But in the wider magnetosphere, matter exists in the rarefied fourth state-plasma, in which the gravitational action is often ignored because it is much smaller than the electromagnetic force. will there still be lunar tidal signals? People don't know about this.

By analyzing the data of more than a dozen satellites at home and abroad (including Chang'e-3 in China, THEMIS in the United States and Cluster in Europe) passing through the "cold plasma ocean" (that is, the plasma layer) of the earth's magnetosphere in the past 40 years, it is found for the first time that there is a clear lunar tide variation in the position of the plasma top (that is, the outer boundary of the plasma layer). The maximum amplitude of this tidal signal is about 800 km. The study shows that this is the combined action of gravity and electromagnetic force, which leads to a significant difference between the characteristics of the tidal signal at the top of the plasma layer and the tidal signal caused only by gravity in the near surface area.

According to reports, this new discovery not only updates people's understanding of tidal phenomena, but also shows that the role of the moon in the near-Earth space environment is more important than previously thought, and expands the understanding of the interaction between the earth and the moon system. it is also helpful to further study the interaction process between moons and planets in other planetary systems. CTOnews.com learned that the research was published in the international academic journal Natural Physics (Nature Physics).
