Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen OC_Formula for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, January 28 (Reuters)-A subsidiary of Japanese automakers Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. and Hitachi Ltd. said on Friday that they plan to launch a system to power elevators during power outages by using batteries from electric vehicles (EV).

At present, few cars can be charged in both directions, that is, the car can be used as a power source for the home, or the energy can be fed back to the grid.

CTOnews.com learned that in earthquake-prone Japan, Nissan and Hitachi Construction Systems are exploring wider use of electric vehicle batteries, focusing on keeping elevators running in the event of power outages.

In a pilot project unveiled on Friday, the two companies said they had made an elevator with a capacity of nine people running at a low speed for 10 hours by extracting electricity from the battery of Nissan's all-electric miniature "Kei" car Sakura.

An executive at Hitachi Construction Systems said the V2X system uses the CHAdeMO charging standard supported by Nissan. This allows it to get electricity from larger Nissan electric cars, such as the Ariya and Leaf.

Takahashi Takahashi, director of the domestic business management department of Hitachi Construction Systems, said he hoped the company would start providing the system to apartment buildings in the fiscal year starting in April.
