Recently, a user has asked such a question, how can the administrator know whether the recipient has read the email sent by a user? I have done the following tests for this question:

Test environment:

DC1: win server2012 R2

Mail system: Exchange 2010 (due to some problems with the environment of exchange 2013, we can only use 2010 environment, this process also applies to exchange 2013\ 2016)

Test account:

From: administrator

To: test01\ test02

Distribution group: IT (member is test01\ test02)

The test process is as follows:

Open EMS with administrator privileges and execute the following command to turn on message reading status tracking:

Set-OrganizationConfig-ReadTrackingEnabled $true

Remarks:

This command is in effect for the entire organization, and if enabled, message reading tracking is enabled for all users.

If you do not want to enable it for a user or some users, we can turn off email reading tracking for these users with the following command:

Turn off for a user:

Check the status of a mailbox user

Get-mailbox-identity test01@contoso.com | fl name,MessageTrackingReadStatusEnabled

Close for a user

Set-Mailbox-Identity test01@contoso.com-MessageTrackingReadStatusEnabled $false

Close for mailboxes in the specified OU

Use the following command to view the status of mailbox users under an OU:

Disable mailbox user reading status tracking under the specified OU by using the following command:

After enabling email reading status tracking for the organization, we send an email to the IT distribution group

Then check the status of the mail sent by this user through the ECP Administration Center-Mail flow-delivery report:

Mailbox to search: sender mailbox

Search the subject line for the following words: enter the subject of the message

If the recipient does not read the message, double-click to open the search mailbox, and we can see that the message is unread:

If members of the distribution group read this message, we re-search the message and double-click to see that the status of the message is read:
