CTOnews.com, January 28, Apple's new M2 Pro and M2 Max chips are so powerful that they are actually overpowered for most Mac users.

A new benchmark ranking shows the running scores of M2 Pro and M2 Max chips compared to all other current Apple Silicon chips, from A14 bionic processors to M1 Ultra.

CTOnews.com learned that Apple announced new chips last week when it launched the new Mac mini and the latest MacBook Pro model. M2 Pro expands the M2 architecture, providing up to 12-core CPU and up to 19-core GPU, plus fast unified memory up to 32GB. Based on the capabilities of M2 Pro, M2 Max includes up to 38 cores of GPU, twice the bandwidth of unified memory, and up to 96GB of unified memory, making it the most powerful and power-efficient professional notebook chip in the world with its industry-leading performance per watt. The two chips also have enhanced customization technology, including a faster 16-core neural engine and Apple's powerful media engine.

"only Apple is building SoC like M2 Pro and M2 Max. While providing incredible professional performance, they also have industry-leading power efficiency," said Johny Srouji, senior vice president of hardware technology at Apple. "M2 Pro and M2 Max represent amazing advances in Apple chips with stronger CPU and GPU, support for a larger unified memory system, and an advanced media engine."

Although the chips still use a 5-nanometer process, Apple says the M2 Pro is stuffed with 40 billion transistors, nearly 20% more than the M1 Pro and twice as many as M2 chips. The M2 Max is stuffed with 67 billion transistors.

Apple says the M2 Pro is 40% faster than the M1 Pro and 80% faster than the high-end Core i9 chip in the previous generation of Intel-powered 16-inch MacBook Pro.

Macworld studied the comparison of M2 Pro ratio M1 Pro chips with all other Apple Silicon chips at present. The fastest Mac is at the top of the chart, followed by iPad and iPhone. The chart shows that iPad Pro can be said to be as fast as MacBook Air, and M1 Ultra is still the king of speed. Both the 48-core and 64-core versions are unmatched by the M2 Max, with the Geekbench 5 multicore scoring 23 Geekbench 369, while the two M2 Max chips scoring 15242; the top M2 Pro score 15079; and the M2 Pro with 10-core CPU and 16-core GPU scoring 11851. The M1 Max also sits between the two M2 Pro models with a score of 12590.
