Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com January 27 news, Seagate yesterday released the second quarter of fiscal 2023 fiscal year ended December 30, 2022 report, revenue and non-GAAP earnings per share slightly higher than expected.

Seagate's Q2 revenue in fiscal 2023 was $1.887 billion (currently about 12.794 billion yuan), down sharply from $3.116 billion in fiscal 2022, and gross profit margin fell from 30.4% to 13%. The net loss reached $33 million (currently about 224 million yuan), from profit to loss compared with the same period last year.

After the release of the results, Seagate also released a roadmap for the development of mechanical hard disk capacity. Judging from the picture, Seagate plans to significantly increase the capacity of its flagship hard drive this year.

It is reported that Seagate plans to launch 22TB and 24TB hard drives based on its latest platform in the first or second quarter, and in the third quarter to release the industry's first hard drive using thermal-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) technology, with a capacity exceeding that of 30TB.

Seagate has long had high hopes for HAMR and has been delivering HAMR-based HDD to customers for evaluation for many years. The company said on an earnings call that it would release its first mass-market hard drive using the second-generation HAMR platform in the third quarter.

"We now expect to launch our 30 + TB platform in the June quarter, slightly ahead of schedule," said Dave Mosley, Seagate's chief executive. "the initial rate of HAMR growth will depend on many factors, including product production and customer qualification schedules. But we plan to use our systems business to accelerate learning and production time."

At present, Seagate has not revealed much information about its HAMR platform, or even the number of discs. However, the company will offer 3.5in HDD mechanical hard drives with 30TB or above capacity.

The company believes that the share of HAMR-based hard drives will not be too high this year, but it will gradually increase with the increase in production of HAMR media and HAMR heads.

"I think [HAMR HDD's share] will probably still be relatively low this year, and the faster we increase production and yield, and all the costs we can control in terms of head and media, the faster we will accelerate. I think this will continue to accelerate in 2024 and 2025. The maximum capacity points will be resolved, and these medium capacity points [.]."

In addition, Seagate says it has managed to cram 5TB data into a single disk in the lab, opening the door to 50TB or higher HDD (assuming 10 or more disks can be used).

The company's public roadmap shows that Seagate plans to deliver 50+TB hard drives in 2026, so the hard drive manufacturer still has plenty of time to refine its 50TB media for mass production.

Of course, Seagate will also continue to improve its CMR / PMR and SMR hard drives. According to reports, Seagate will release 10 HDD (CMR / PMR) with 2.2TB and 22TB capacity in the first or second quarter. For those who are willing to use stacked tile technology, the capacity of a hard drive will be increased to 24TB.

The new 22TB CMR / PMR and 24TB SMR HDD will be the company's top main hard drives, replacing 20TB CMR / PMR and 22TB SMR hard drives.
