CTOnews.com, January 27, the CSA connection Standards Alliance, composed of nearly 600 companies committed to open standards of the Internet of things, recently announced the release of Zigbee Direct, a new feature of the Zigbee standard, which can make use of ubiquitous and easy-to-operate low-power Bluetooth (BLE) devices to simplify the access of new Zigbee devices and the control of existing devices.

Zigbee Direct allows consumers to communicate directly with the large ecosystem of Zigbee devices, such as smartphones and smart speakers, without going through the cloud or hub. The combination of Zigbee PRO mesh network and feature-rich Zigbee Cluster Library ensures reliability, high performance, and interoperability, while the ubiquitous BLE in control devices such as hubs, smartphones and tablets simplifies device access and control.

Using the Zigbee Direct authentication program, new and existing Zigbee users can use their existing Bluetooth devices to control or configure new products, and the configuration of large networks in commercial buildings becomes easier.

CTOnews.com learned that Zigbee is a standards-based wireless technology designed to achieve low-cost, low-power wireless connectivity between devices and the Internet of things.

Although Zigbee has been around for more than 20 years, the development of its protocol stack is still actively advancing and its scope is expanding, and the 23rd version of the Zigbee Pro technical specification is expected to be released later this year. More than 1 billion Zigbee chip platforms have been shipped, and hundreds of companies continue to build and deploy Zigbee products. In 2022 alone, more than 400 Zigbee terminal products and chip platforms have been certified, and to date, the cumulative number of certifications has exceeded 4700.

The Zigbee solution family already includes Zigbee, Zigbee Smart Energy and Green Power, the alliance's low-power solution, and has grown with the addition of Zigbee Direct.
