Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com January 27, Ubuntu developer Canonical announced the full launch of Ubuntu Pro subscriptions for Ubuntu users who want to extend system security updates and compliance.
Ubuntu Pro first released the Beta version in October 2022, with free subscriptions for personal and small-scale business use on up to 5 devices. Ubuntu Pro is only available for the Ubuntu LTS (long-term support) version, starting with Ubuntu 16.04, with a commitment of 10 years of security updates and access to proprietary tools.
These include Ansible, Apache Tomcat, Apache Zookeeper, Docker, Drupal, Nagios, Node.js, phpMyAdmin, Puppet, PowerDNS, Python 2, Redis, Rust, WordPress, ROS and so on.
Ubuntu Pro subscriptions promise to patch critical CVE in less than 24 hours and extend optional technical support to an additional 23000 open source packages and tool chains outside the main operating system, not just Ubuntu's main software repository.
"the beta has been welcomed by companies such as NVIDIA, Google, Acquia, VMWare and LaunchDarkly. Tens of thousands of Ubuntu users have signed up for the service since the beta was launched in October 2022," Canonical said.
Ubuntu Pro also gives users access to FIPS 140-2 certified encryption packages, tools for compliance management in regulated and audited environments, Livepatch support for non-restart kernel updates, and large-scale automatic patching for system administration and use of Landscape.
Canonical said that if you need Ubuntu Pro subscriptions for more than five PC, you must buy a payment plan, which currently costs $25 a year for workstations and $500 a year for servers, with a 30-day free trial. Members of the official Ubuntu community can receive free support for up to 50 devices.
CTOnews.com learned that to add Ubuntu Pro subscriptions to Ubuntu LTS devices, users need a free Ubuntu One account where they can access Ubuntu Pro tokens. This can be enabled on the system through software and update utilities, in the Livepatch tab, or manually by running the following command from the command line (where TOKEN must be replaced with the user's Ubuntu Pro token).
Sudo ua attach TOKEN to see if Ubuntu Pro subscriptions are activated, go to the updates tab of the Software and updates utility and see if the extended Security maintenance (ESM) plan under "this system owns for other packages" is active.
For those running Ubuntu in the cloud, Ubuntu Pro is also available through Canonical public cloud partners such as Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud.
