Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com January 27, analyst Guo Mingyi said that Apple has suspended work on the Wi-Fi chip it is developing. The development of Apple's Wi-Fi chip has been "suspended" and Apple will postpone it for "some time".

CTOnews.com learned that this means that Apple supplier Broadcom will continue to provide Wi-Fi chips to Apple for the foreseeable future, including chips for the iPhone 15 / Pro series to be released in 2023.

Guo Mingyi's specific report is as follows:

Many investors worry that Apple's development of its own Wi-Fi chip will significantly affect Broadcom's Wi-Fi chip business. However, according to the latest survey of the semiconductor industry (wafer foundry, equipment and closed testing), Apple has stopped developing its own Wi-Fi chips for some time.

More strictly speaking, Apple previously developed its own Wi-Fi scheme for Wi-Fi single chip, rather than Wi-Fi+BT integrated chip. From the perspective of IC design, the design difficulty of Wi-Fi+BT integrated chip is higher than that of Wi-Fi single chip. Because Wi-Fi+BT integrated chips are used in Apple's main terminal products, it means that Apple will face higher challenges if it wants to replace Broadcom's Wi-Fi+BT integrated chips with its own chips.

Processor upgrades slow down sales of end products (such as A16 and M2 series chips). Therefore, in order to ensure the smooth mass production and performance upgrade of the world's most advanced 3nm process processors from 2023 to 2025, Apple has devoted most of the IC design resources to the development of processors. The lack of development resources has delayed the mass production of Apple's own 5G baseband chips, not to mention Wi-Fi chips of lower strategic value. In other words, Apple's own Wi-Fi chip development visibility is even lower than its own 5G baseband chip.

In the next 2-3 years, the Wi-Fi chip will usher in an important Wi-Fi 6e / 7 upgrade. When the industry standard changes significantly, the active use of our own Wi-Fi chip is more risky to Apple.

To sum up, investors should not worry that Apple's own Wi-Fi chip will affect Broadcom's Wi-Fi chip business in the foreseeable future. On the contrary, in the next few years, Apple and competitors will gradually adopt higher-priced Wi-Fi 6e / 7 chips, and Broadcom is the leading beneficiary of the Wi-Fi specification upgrade trend. In addition, Broadcom is the biggest winner in upgrading from iPhone 15 to Wi-Fi 6e.
