Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen OC_Formula for clue delivery! CTOnews.com world's first AI lawyer, trained and developed by DoNotPay, was due to appear in court in February 2023 to defend defendants in speeding cases.
However, DoNotPay CEO Joshua Browder announced that he would shelve AI lawyers 'plans to appear in court amid strong opposition from human "peers" and the risk of jail.
Browder told NPR that since announcing his appearance, he has received numerous fiery letters, with multiple state bar associations threatening his company, one of which even said he could be jailed for six months. "Even if there's not going to be real imprisonment, the threat of criminal charges is enough to make me drop it. "
Browder declined to say which state bar associations sent him threatening letters or which officials threatened him with possible prosecution. DoNotPay is under investigation by several state bar associations, including California, he said.
CTOnews.com learned that when AI lawyers appear in court, defendants in speeding cases will wear smart glasses and record the court proceedings through a camera, and AI lawyers will prompt defendants from a speaker how to answer. The system relies on a number of AI text generators, including ChatGPT and DaVinci.
The problem, however, is that U.S. state courts generally do not allow audio to be recorded during live legal proceedings, and AI lawyers need to record audio in court and give answers based on the audio.
Browder said DoNotPay will no longer be used in speeding cases, but will focus on helping people deal with expensive medical expenses, unwanted subscriptions and credit reporting agencies.
Browder says he hopes this isn't the end of AI in court. "The truth is that most people can't afford a lawyer, and AI lawyers may change that by allowing people to use tools like ChatGPT in court, which may help them win cases. "
