CTOnews.com January 25, SK Hynix announced that the company has successfully developed the world's fastest mobile DRAM (memory) "LPDDR5T (Low Power Double Data Rate 5 Turbo)" and has provided samples to customers.

SK Hynix launched mobile DRAM LPDDR5X in November last year and has now successfully developed LPDDR5T to improve its performance. The speed of this product is 13% faster than the existing products, and the running speed is as high as 9.6Gbps (Gb / s). Naming the specification name "LPDDR5" with the "Turbo" suffix shows stronger performance. The LPDDR5X speed is 8.5Gbps.

At the same time, the LPDDR5T operates at a minimum voltage of 1.01V to 1.12V (volts) specified by the International Semiconductor Standardization Organization (JEDEC). This product has the characteristics of high speed and low power consumption.

The company has recently provided customers with packaging samples that combine LPDDR5T chips into 16GB (gigabit) capacity. According to SK Hynix, the sample can process data at speeds of up to 77GB per second, equivalent to 15 full high-definition (Full-HD) movies per second.

CTOnews.com has learned that SK Hynix plans to adopt the fourth generation 10nm (1a) fine process and will promote mass production of this product in the second half of this year.

In addition, SK Hynix also uses the "HKMG (High-K Metal Gate)" process in this product to achieve the best performance, and the company expects that LPDDR5T, which widens the technology gap significantly, will dominate the market before the next generation of LPDDR6 comes out.

SK Hynix expects LPDDR5T to be used not only in smartphones, but also in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (Machine Learning), enhanced / virtual reality (AR / VR) and so on.

The specification name is accompanied by "LP (Low Power, low power consumption)". The latest specification is the seventh generation LPDDR (5X), developed in the order of 1-2-3-4-4X-5-5X. LPDDR5T is the first product developed by SK Hynix industry, and it is a product that further upgrades the performance of the seventh generation LPDDR (5X) before the eighth generation LPDDR6 is officially released.

HKMG (High-K Metal Gate): a new generation process that uses high K gate dielectrics on the insulating film in the DRAM transistor to prevent leakage while improving the capacitor (Capacitance). It can not only improve the memory speed, but also reduce the power consumption. SK Hynix adopted HKMG technology for the first time in the world on mobile DRAM in November last year.
