According to news on the morning of January 25, Beijing time, Microsoft today released its financial results for the second quarter of fiscal year 2023 ending December 31, 2022. Microsoft reported second-quarter revenue of $52.7 billion (currently about 357.306 billion yuan), up 2 per cent from a year earlier. Net profit was $16.4 billion (currently about 111.192 billion yuan), down 12% from a year earlier. Net profit, excluding non-GAAP, was $17.4 billion (currently about 117.972 billion yuan), down 7 per cent from a year earlier.

After the earnings release, Microsoft CEO Satyanadra (Satya Nadella), CFO Amy Hood (Amy Hood), chief accounting officer Alice Jolla and legal counsel on behalf of Keith Dolliver and other executives attended the subsequent earnings conference call to interpret the main points of the results and answer analysts' questions.

Morgan Stanley analyst Keith Weiss: I'd like to have an in-depth discussion with management about Microsoft's investment in OpenAI, an artificial intelligence research company. With the further increase of investment, does the current scope of cooperation between Microsoft and OpenAI expand? What are the specific areas of cooperation? In addition, from the perspective of investors, what other functions and services will Microsoft and OpenAI bring to users in addition to the Azure OpenAI service released a few days ago? What positive impact will this partnership have on other Microsoft products such as Bing?

Satyanadella: our partnership with OpenAI began three years ago. In the past three years, Microsoft has been committed to achieving close cooperation between the two sides, the fundamental reason is that we firmly believe that the wave of artificial intelligence is unstoppable, once enterprises seize this "wave" can create a lot of value. In addition, the wave of artificial intelligence will also affect all aspects of the technology stack, providing people with new solutions and creating new opportunities. So whenever we think about new platform opportunities, AI is the answer. We need to think: how to ride the AI tide fundamentally? How to expand the coverage of AI? What can we create with AI? From this point of view, the core of Azure or cloud computing is how to effectively combine network and storage. In a sense, the problem behind this is very complicated. Over the past three years, Microsoft has devoted itself to training supercomputers and building reasoning infrastructure, because once artificial intelligence is applied to programs, training and reasoning problems are bound to be involved. So I think the impact of Azure on the industry is far-reaching, and we hope to provide you with much more than Azure OpenAI services. How to combine OpenAI with Microsoft's Azure Synapse analysis service and so on are in our consideration. At present, our Power Platform already has the ability to integrate.

One of the reasons why Microsoft has become the industry leader in workflow automation today is our outstanding AI capabilities. In fact, GitHub and Copilot have become the products with the highest AI content in the market. In terms of productivity and consumer services, we want to integrate AI into all levels of Microsoft's technology stack. We look forward to these ideas very much.
