Web services company Yahoo became the most impersonated brand in phishing attacks in the last three months of 2022. Cybersecurity firm Check Point has released its latest Branded Phishing Report, which highlights the brands that cybercriminals impersonate the most to entice people to leak their personal information data.

According to the report, 20% of brand phishing attempts impersonate Yahoo, and cybercriminals send emails containing the subject "Yahoo Award" and senders such as "Award Promotion,""Award Center,""Info winning" or "Award Winning."

The content of the email tells the recipient that they have won hundreds of thousands of dollars in prize money from Yahoo. However, in order to receive the bonus, users must send their personal information and bank details-an obvious attempt to steal sensitive data from victims. The e-mail even told the recipient that he couldn't tell anyone else about the win because of legal issues.

CTOnews.com learned that DHL was the second most impersonated brand in Check Point's report at 16 percent, while Microsoft was third at 11 percent. Other brands on the list include Google, LinkedIn, WeTransfer, Netflix, FedEx, HSBC and WhatsApp.

Finally, the study found that technology was the industry most likely to be impersonated by phishers in Q4 2022, followed by shipping and Social networks.

To protect yourself from phishing attacks, always exercise caution when opening links or downloading attachments from unsolicited emails, as they may contain malware. Also, get into the habit of checking the URLs of related websites. For example, if the URL does not begin with yahoo.com, it is likely fraudulent. Finally, enable two-factor authentication (if available) to ensure that cybercriminals cannot infiltrate a user's account even if the user accidentally provides a username and password.
