Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com, January 25, according to 9to5 Mac, through a quick look at the inside of the basic M2 Pro MacBook Pro, some new materials have been found. Like the basic M2 MacBook Air, the 2023's latest 14-inch MacBook Pro seems to have fewer NAND chips-but higher capacity-than the previous generation. As a result, the read and write performance of SSD is much lower than that of the previous generation.

The basic M1 and M2 MacBook Air provide only 256GB storage space. For M1 MacBook Air, the storage space is allocated to two 128GB armor NAND chips. As Apple moved to M2 chips, it also switched to newer NAND chips, each of which provided 256GB storage space. This means that the basic model M2 MacBook Air, which has only 256GB storage space, has only one NAND chip, which affects the performance of SSD.

CTOnews.com learned that, like the M1 MacBook Air, the storage space of the basic 512GB M1 Pro MacBook Pro is divided into four 128GB NAND chips. During the iFixit disassembly, they showed two 128GB NAND chips on one side of the motherboard and two other 128GB NAND chips on the other side. Like the previous M2 MacBook Air, M2 MacBook Pro seems to have switched to a larger NAND chip, so 512GB stores the basic model of SSD with slower performance.

"since the SSD performance of M2 Pro MacBook Pro is obviously low, I would like to look inside to confirm the reason. Sure enough, the 512GB M1 Pro MacBook Pro has two NAND chips on the front of the motherboard and two on the back, while the M2 Pro MacBook Pro has only one visible on the front of the motherboard, and there may be a second NAND chip directly juxtaposed with it, just like M1."

While the higher memory density of NAND chips is a good thing, it is always disappointing when the performance of products deteriorates between generations. But most people don't expect to see its impact in their daily use. Disk reads and writes are still very fast, so this difference may only be apparent in extreme cases.
