Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen Brother Black fly's left hand clue delivery! Beijing, January 25 (Xinhua) the US Department of Justice and eight states sued Google on Tuesday, saying it illegally monopolized the digital advertising market and demanded a break-up of the search giant's advertising technology business.

Jonathan Kanter, antitrust director of the US Department of Justice, said at a news conference announcing the lawsuit on Tuesday that Google had implemented 15 years of anti-competitive behaviour, including "acquiring market dominance through acquisitions". Google bought online advertising giant DoubleClick for $3.1 billion in 2007 (the Justice Department is seeking to undo the deal), Invite Media for $81 million in 2010, and AdMeld for $400m in 2011.

"the lawsuit we filed today aims to hold Google responsible for its long-standing monopoly in digital advertising technology. these technologies are used by content creators to sell ads on the open Internet and by advertisers to buy ads." He said.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland (Merrick Garland) said at a news conference: "No matter which industry, no matter which company, the Department of Justice will firmly implement our anti-monopoly law."

Eight states, including New York, California and Virginia, jointly signed the petition and submitted it to the Federal Court of Virginia.

Google said in a blog post that the lawsuit was "an attempt to pick winners and losers in the highly competitive field of advertising technology. The case" largely repeats a baseless lawsuit brought by the Texas attorney general, most of which was recently dismissed by a federal court. The Justice Department has doubled its bet on a flawed argument that will slow innovation, raise advertising costs and make it harder for thousands of small businesses and publishers to develop. "

The Justice Department's lawsuit also requires Google to compensate for overcharging federal agencies, such as the U.S. Army, for online advertising. The agency said the US government had spent more than $100m on online display advertising since 2019, but the complaint did not say how much the Justice Department was seeking compensation.

The lawsuit is the second antitrust lawsuit filed by the Justice Department against Google and the fifth major case in the United States that challenges the company's business practices. The US state attorney general also filed three separate lawsuits against Google, accusing it of violating antitrust laws by dominating the online search, advertising technology and application market on the Android mobile platform.

Shares of Alphabet, Google's parent company, were down 2.09 per cent as of Tuesday's close. In the 12 months to Monday, the stock has fallen 23%, underperforming the Nasdaq 100 index.
