Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, January 25 news, although the new Mac mini with M2 chip starts at a lower price of US $599 (Bank of China 4499 yuan), compared with the previous generation of models equipped with M1 chip and 256GB storage space, the basic model with 256GB storage space is slower to read and write.
The new Mac mini disassembly shared by YouTube channel Brandon Geekabit shows that the M2 chip version of the 256GB comes with only one 256GB memory chip, while the M1 chip version is equipped with two 128GB memory chips. This difference explains why the new model of SSD is slower, because multiple NAND chips can achieve faster speeds.
"We have confirmed through the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test benchmark application that the SSD read and write speed of the new 256GB Mac mini is about 1500 MB/s each, which is 30 to 50 per cent slower than that of the equivalent previous generation, although the benchmark results and actual performance may be different."
Users looking for the fastest SSD speed should ensure that at least 512GB storage space is configured for M2 Mac mini to avoid this problem. CTOnews.com learned that slower SSD affects file transfer speed and slightly affects overall performance because Mac temporarily uses SSD space as virtual memory when physical memory is fully used.
As for the high-end Mac mini with M2 Pro chips, according to the disassembly shared by MacStadium's Brian Stucki, the basic model with 512GB storage space appears to have two fewer NAND chips than previous Intel-based models.
The 13-inch MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models with M2 chips and 256GB storage also have slower SSD speeds due to the use of a single NAND chip, so it is clear that Apple has not decided to change the course of the new Mac mini.
In a statement shared with The Verge last year, Apple claimed that the M2-based Mac had "faster" performance in real-world activities, but it was not clear whether the statement referred to SSD performance or overall system performance:
"thanks to the improved performance of M2, the 13-inch speed of the new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro is incredible, even compared to Mac laptops with powerful M1 chips. These new systems use the new higher-density NAND and use a single chip to provide 256GB storage. While the 256GB SSD benchmark may be different from the previous generation, these M2-based systems perform even faster in real-world activity."
In addition, according to 9to5Mac, due to the reduction of NAND chips, the new 2023 MacBook Pro has a slower SSD speed when configuring 512GB storage space.
