CTOnews.com, January 24 / PRNewswire-Asianet /-- ZeroAvia has test-flown the world's largest hydrogen-electric aircraft in the UK, taking another step towards sustainable aviation fuel flight.

The 19-seat twin-engine Dornier 228, equipped with a hydrogen electric prototype system, completed a 10-minute flight during the test. Its power system is fueled by compressed gaseous hydrogen generated by an on-site electrolyzer, and the test configuration includes two fuel cell stacks and lithium-ion battery packs.

As can be seen from the screen, as a result of the test flight, the batteries are placed inside the cabin and will be removed from the cabin to make room for seats during the real commercial flight. In addition, there is a Honeywell TPE-331 engine on the right side of the wing to provide additional power when takeoff and key functions require redundancy.

CTOnews.com learned that ZeroAvia's hydrogen-electric aircraft is part of a British government-sponsored HyFlyer II research and development program, which aims to make small passenger jets more environmentally friendly. According to ZeroAvia's vision, they will complete the technical verification this year, and then open commercial routes by 2025.

The company is also working on a 2-5 MW powertrain that will be used in aircraft with fewer than 90 seats, with the goal of expanding to narrow-body aircraft over the next decade. It is worth mentioning that Amazon has already invested in ZeroAvia.
