CTOnews.com, January 23 (Xinhua)-- Finnish telecom equipment maker Nokia announced today that it has signed a new multi-year agreement to grant its 5G patent to Samsung after the agreement expired before December last year.

According to reports, Samsung began to pay Nokia from January 1, but the two companies did not disclose the terms of the deal. Officials say Nokia's patent portfolio includes about 20, 000 patent families, of which more than 4500 are 5G essential patents.

Nokia said it contributed its invention to open standards in exchange for the right to be authorized under fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms.

"Samsung is a leader in the smartphone industry and we are pleased to reach a friendly agreement with them," said Jenny Lukander, president of Nokia Technologies. The agreement gives the two companies the freedom to innovate and reflects the strength of Nokia's patent portfolio, decades of R & D investment and its contribution to cellular standards and other technologies. "

The agreement is consistent with the assumptions disclosed in Nokia's long-term technology outlook reviews for the third quarter of 2022 and January-September 2022 financial results released on October 20, 2022.
