On January 18, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the Global Battery Alliance (GBA) released the results of the proof of concept of battery passport for the first time.

The Touyuan Pexels battery passport, developed over three years by members of the Global Battery Alliance (GBA), is key to promoting the rapid expansion of the sustainable, recycled and responsible battery value chain. The ultimate goal of the passport is to provide users with quality assurance of battery sustainable performance. The concept of battery passport has been endorsed by the G7 leaders' meeting in 2021, the EU battery regulations and the governments of Canada and the United States. By 2026, battery passports will become a mandatory requirement for the European Union, and other regions are likely to follow suit.

Batteries are the key to starting the energy transformation. At the same time, batteries are material-and resource-intensive and inevitably have social and environmental impacts throughout the value chain. This includes greenhouse gas emissions from material procurement, processing and battery manufacturing, as well as child labour and human rights violations. Bringing transparency to the battery value chain through the introduction of battery passports is a key step in building a sustainable battery value chain in a fast-growing industry.

The battery passport creates a digital twin of a physical battery that conveys all applicable sustainability and life cycle requirements based on a comprehensive definition of sustainable battery. It will bring new transparency to the global battery value chain, collect, exchange, collate and report credible data on material sources, battery chemical composition and manufacturing history and sustainable performance among all life cycle stakeholders.

The prototype of the battery passport released this time records the life cycle data of the three batteries, including manufacturing history, chemical composition, technical specifications, carbon footprint and so on. The three batteries come from automakers Audi and Tesla.

CTOnews.com learned that after the successful launch of the proof of concept, the Global Battery Alliance will continue to develop the battery passport architecture, including the development of a comprehensive and simplified indicator framework. Members of the Global Battery Alliance will jointly develop rules and mechanisms for performance scoring, data management, assurance and verification, including information technology tools. Once completed, batteries can be benchmarked in the future to identify the best and worst batteries based on the Global Battery Alliance's verifiable definition of sustainable and responsible batteries, and track the progress of the industry by issuing the Global Battery Alliance's battery quality seal.
