BMW has just announced that it will provide software online OTA system upgrades for iDrive 7.0 and iDrive 8.0 vehicles, and the Chinese market may follow suit to launch a new round of remote upgrades. Currently, about 4.7 million BMW vehicles can upgrade the iDrive operating system.

It is worth mentioning that the update will allow users to use BMW's BMW digital car keys on iPhone and Android smartphones. When the software is upgraded, the BMW digital key shared by the smartphone can be activated directly in the vehicle by entering the activation code, whereas the traditional car key had to be placed in the car to enable the vehicle.

CTOnews.com has learned that starting from November 2022, BMW digital keys will be applicable to Huawei, Glory, Xiaomi, vivo and OPPO brands. Remote upgrades may allow more Android smartphone brands to use digital keys in the future.

In addition, you can park your car remotely through the My BMW app, but this only works if you are within six meters of the car.

Us models will also work with AT&T to use personal eSIM features, and the three major domestic operators are expected to quickly follow up on the upgrade.

The personal eSIM function will be provided for BMW models equipped with iD8, integrated into customers' existing mobile phone contracts, and enable vehicles to support 5G standard networks. Customers do not need to use a smartphone in the car to make calls, transmit data through Wi-Fi hotspots, and use video services directly in the car, and faster in-car network speed brings unlimited possibilities for entertainment and communication.

In addition, some BMW iX owners can also stop charging and unlock the charging lock through the My BMW app. The BMW iX and the new BMW X1 are equipped with an optional parking assist system (SA 5DM) for active steering assistance when reversing. Other upgrades to BMW's new BMW 7-Series will get My Modes's new "digital art" theme model after remote software upgrades. At present, the new domestic 7 series and i7 have four My Modes theme modes: soothing, personality, sports, pleasing movement and energy saving. Equipped with BMW floating giant screen, it will also increase the "cinema mode".

With regard to the iDrive 9 system, BMW has previously said it will make its debut on some new Elica models as early as March 2023.

As for why not replace all cars with the new BMW OS 9? In fact, the reason is still very embarrassing. After all, BMW OS 9 runs on the Android platform. At present, like the new 7 Series, which uses the iDrive 8 system, the system runs on the Linux platform, and the logic of the whole car system code is not the same. But BMW officials say the interactive experience will be very similar, whether it's iDrive 8.5 or OS 9.

Currently, the iDrive 8.5 will be used for the first time on the new BMW 5-Series / i5, which will be released in the summer of 2023, and the new 7-Series / i7 will also be updated to 8.5 later this year.
