Google is developing a new Bluetooth distance measurement API that will allow users to know the distance between their Bluetooth accessories and their smartphones. Esper's Mishaal Rahman discovered the new Bluetooth distance measurement API, and Google has added its code to AOSP.

CTOnews.com learned that although the distance measurement is not accurate, the new Bluetooth distance measurement API will tell you the approximate location, that is, whether the user's smartphone is more or less than 1 meter away from the Bluetooth accessory. It is worth noting that the new API will use Bluetooth RSSI (received signal strength indicator) to measure the distance between the phone and the connected device.

However, this is different from the way Apple's AirTag tracker works, which points users in the right direction for lost Bluetooth accessories and tells users if they are approaching. In the case of Google's Bluetooth distance measurement feature, it is expected to wait until Android 14 to see its early signs or full debut.
