According to CTOnews.com, January 21, the Debian-based Netrunner OS distribution will launch its first stable version 23 in 2023, with the KDE Plasma 5.20 desktop environment series and a solid Debian GNU / Linux 11 "Bullseye" foundation.

Netrunner OS 23, known as "Vaporwave", came out nearly two years after the release of Netrunner OS 21.01. This is the first version of the GNU / Linux distribution of desktop computers based on the latest and most powerful Debian GNU / Linux 11 "Bullseye" operating system family.

Previous versions of Netrunner OS are derived from Debian GNU / Linux 10 "Buster" and come with the Linux kernel 5.9. The new Netrunner OS version is supported by Debian Bullseye's long-supported Linux5.10 kernel family, which will provide security and bug fix support by December 2026.

Of course, Netrunner OS 23 also comes with a newer KDE Plasma desktop environment, KDE Plasma 5.20.5. This is a big improvement over the KDE Plasma 5.14 series used in the previous release, but support for KDE Plasma 5.20 ended two years ago.

Unfortunately, this is the version available in the Debian Bullseye repository. However, due to the various customizations included in Netrunner, users will get a unique Plasma desktop experience. The KDE Plasma 5.20.5 desktop environment ships with the KDE Frameworks 5.78 and KDE Gear 20.12.2 software suites.

CTOnews.com learned that in addition to all the excellent KDE applications included in Netrunner, the new version comes with the latest ESR (extended support version) version of the Mozilla Firefox browser and Thunderbird email client, LibreOffice office suite, VirtualBox virtualization software, VLC media player, Audacious audio player, HandBrake video transcoder, PidginIM client, Transmission BitTorrent client.

It also includes Steam clients for games, GIMP image editors, InkscapeSVG editors, Krita digital painting applications, and AppImageLauncher--, a tool for running more and newer applications that are provided in a common AppImage binary format.
