Improved display technology will be a major focus for many companies' new laptops this year.
Screen display technology has always been the focus of international electronic consumption, from Samsung and LG to Skyworth, Sharp, from mobile phones, notebooks to TV terminals, cutting-edge new products in different forms have been unveiled on 2023 CES, major brands are trying to display "cool techs" to compete for consumer attention, these innovative technologies have also brought brand-new changes in the electronic consumer market.
As a major protagonist of electronic consumption, PC, especially notebooks, has attracted much attention, and many relevant manufacturers have brought the latest products, including upstream suppliers such as Intel, AMD, Nvidia, as well as ROG, ALIENWARE, Acer, Lenovo, Thunder Snake and many other equipment manufacturers. In addition to bringing brand-new choices to consumers, which industries' development trends are revealed behind these new products?
The big screen is coming.
Both the Strix G18 and Strix Scar 18 will be launched this year. Photo: Asustek will have a big screen this year-metaphorically and literally, large laptops will shine on this year's CES.
Overall, laptops are switching to the 16:10 aspect ratio, which gives higher devices extra vertical screen space. This was followed by a shift to an 18-inch laptop.
Especially in the game field, we look forward to seeing some of the largest laptops ever released in 2023. Some of these monsters are absolutely huge, such as alien M18, which weighs more than 9 pounds. Others, such as Thunder Snake Blade 18, are the largest computer in the history of Thunder Snake.
Thunder Snake is far from the only company that has made an 18-inch leap this year. Asus, Acer and Alienware, as well as Dell and Razer will all be at the top of the list with an 18-inch high-end product line. There are also many famous 15-inch models, including the Asustek ROG Zephyrus G15 and Razer's Blade 15, which have been upgraded to the 16:10 16-inch model this year.
02, Mini LED has become the mainstream
Razer shows its Blade 16 next to the Mini LED panel, which mimics the brightening and dimming of Blade LED. In the past few years, Mini LED has been gradually entering the field of notebook computers. But we expect it to explode into the high-end mainstream in 2023 because it will make its debut in many of the upcoming famous game consoles. One of the big names is Asustek's ROG Zephyrus G14, one of the most anticipated versions of 14-inch games. We will also see it on Razer Blade 16, as well as other high-end models of Asustek and MSI.
Unlike standard LCD screens that project images using a set of lights (or large groups), Mini LED displays use a number of tiny diodes (local dimming areas) that can be brightened or dimmed independently. Although Mini LED does not provide exactly the same contrast and energy savings as OLED displays, it usually produces higher peak brightness and does not have the same aging and image retention problems as OLED. Of course, it is not without shortcomings, one is the high cost, it basically appears in some high-end or flagship product selection list; the second is because the integration of more backlight beads, so the heat will be higher.
But speaking of OLED...,
03. OLED has become more affordable
The upcoming Zenbook Pro 14 OLED will include a 120Hz OLED 2.8K OLED screen. Photo: Asustek has been moving towards an affordable OLED for several years, and in 2022, we saw some of the cheapest OLED devices ever, from the Hewlett-Packard $819 Pavilion Plus to the Asustek $649 Vivobook Slate. This trend is expected to continue this year.
Asustek has been fully committed to OLED for several years, launching a series of absolutely dazzling OLED devices at this year's CES, covering almost all categories and prices.
LG brings two concept OLED displays, Virtual Ride and Media Chair, which are composed of tens of millions of spontaneous light pixels that support bending, folding and crimping design, without the need for a separate backlight. The company also released a 17-inch collapsible OLED display for laptops and a series of translucent OLED screens with a resolution of 1080p.
The technology will continue to appear in the products of other major manufacturers such as Acer and Lenovo. Acer will offer OLED and its new Swift Go series, starting at less than $1000, while Lenovo's Slim 5 (starting at EUR 649 in Europe, Middle East and Africa) will also offer the technology. Lenovo's collapsible laptop will have a total of two OLED screens.
04. High refresh rate meets high resolution
Acer's top Predator Helios will include a 250Hz Magi QHD Magi Mini LED display. Photo: Acer used to have to choose between a 1080p screen with a high refresh rate and a higher resolution screen with an upper limit of 60Hz. This year we will see more laptops that reject this compromise.
QHD screens with fairly high refresh rates will be ubiquitous at the high end of the market. For example, the upcoming Zephyrus G16 combines QHD resolution with 240Hz refresh rates. Acer's Predator Helios is not to be outdone and will provide 250Hz refresh rates and Mini LED,WQXGA screens. Thunder Snake's mini LED display can even switch between 1920 x 1200 / 240Hz and 4K / 120Hz. It seems that 120Hz will be a low-end specification this year, which was a luxury not long ago.
05. Naked-eye 3D tries to make a comeback
This is a spatial visual demonstration running on the upcoming ProArt Studiobook. In fact, in 2011, various companies were trying to make naked 3D on laptops.
Asustek announced the launch of the Spatial Vision, its first naked-eye 3D display. Spatial Vision will make its debut this year on two upcoming Asustek laptops, including an Vivobook. The biggest highlight of the product is the use of an OLED display screen that supports naked 3D and the implementation of eye tracking technology to ensure that the screen is always in the focus of the user's line of sight. Acer also announced updates to its SpatialLabs display, which should create a more convincing 3D effect.
Acer's SpatialLabs is now available on its high-end 4K Predator Helios. Asustek is actually equipped with a 3.2K OLED,120Hz screen, naked-eye 3D OLED screen technology allows users to watch 3D videos and movies, play 3D games and enjoy 3D model visualization or content creation, while also providing SR-based development tools to build a visionary ecosystem around 3D technology and will incubate more notebook products with an excellent 3D experience in the future.
Conclusion these are just some interesting display functions that we may see this year. With the help of several upstream chip manufacturers, the ultimate performance improvement of notebooks is an inevitable trend, and will further narrow the gap with desktop products.
Larger screen size arises at the historic moment, bringing a better visual perception for the majority of consumers. The Mini LED screen will become a new option for flagship products this year and for the next few years, along with OLED, glowing in the notebook industry.
We may see many of these combinations on high-end displays that provide a smoother and more beautiful experience than we used to on laptops.
