CTOnews.com, January 21, Canonical delayed the release of Ubuntu 22.04.2 by two weeks to February 23 because of problems with new hardware support (HWE) kernels designed to make updated hardware work with long-term support versions of the current operating system. Users running Ubuntu 22.04 are not affected by this, but those looking forward to the release of the HWE kernel will have to wait longer.

When trying to port the Linux5.19 kernel shipped with Ubuntu 22.10 to Ubuntu 22.04, Canonical encountered some unexpected compiler and DKMS problems, which slowed down the process. By delaying the release by two weeks, the company hopes to run more tests on the new kernel to ensure stability. After all, Ubuntu 22.04 is the LTS version, and users expect more stability.

CTOnews.com learned that in addition to kernel issues, Canonical also prepares shim15.7 (which provides UEFI support) to upload to the archive. Because this version revokes the existing key, you want to ensure that the existing installation continues to work properly. As part of this process, all kernels in Ubuntu 22.04.2 need to be rebuilt. The extra time will enable the work to be completed more smoothly.

All of these delays mean that users will have to wait longer to get a new Ubuntu 22.04.2 ISO image. If the user is already running Ubuntu 22.04, just continue to install any available updates to keep them up to date.
