Beijing, January 20 (Beijing time)-EU internal market commissioner Thierry Thierry Breton told TikTok CEO Zhou on Thursday that if the app does not speed up its efforts to comply with EU legislation by September this year, it may be banned in the EU.

According to the pronunciation of the two-man video call released by the EU, Bretton told Zhou that TikTok needed to bring its business into compliance with the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA), well before the September 1 deadline. "if the audit does not show full compliance, we will not hesitate to take comprehensive sanctions to protect our citizens." Bretton said.

Bretton also issued a ban threat to TikTok. "younger users mean greater responsibility. Behind features that seem interesting and harmless, it is unacceptable that users can access harmful or even life-threatening content in seconds. DSA includes dissuasive sanctions, including a ban in the European Union, in case repeated serious corporate violations threaten people's lives or safety."

TikTok responded that the company was committed to complying with DSA and outlined its efforts to comply with other EU legislation, such as the General data Protection regulations (GDPR) and the code of conduct for false information. "the safety of our users is critical." Caroline Greer, director of public policy and government relations at TikTok, said on Twitter.

DSA requires online platforms to strengthen the regulation of illegal content on the Internet. If it violates the rules, the platform will face a fine of up to 6 per cent of annual global turnover.

Mr Zhou visited Brussels last week and met with senior regulators, including Margrethe Vestager, the EU's antitrust director. The company is trying to reassure the EU that it will respect the EU's increasingly stringent technical rules, as well as its commitment to privacy and child safety.

For the past three years, TikTok has been grappling with U.S. concerns about the security of personal data. Last month, the parent company of TikTok admitted that some employees had improperly accessed the TikTok user data of two journalists in an attempt to determine the source of the information leaked to the media. After that, the pressure on the company increased.
