According to news in the morning of January 20, Beijing time, according to reports, Google's internal documents show that the company's management recently decided to postpone the issuance of employees' year-end bonus checks. Behind this move, Google is actually considering permanently delaying the payment of the year-end bonus.

According to past practice, Google employees usually receive a year-end bonus in January, that is, the full bonus of the previous year. But this month, Google will pay 80% of last year's bonus (by check) to full-time employees who are eligible for year-end bonuses, and the remaining 20% will be paid in March or April, according to internal documents.

The second tranche of year-end bonuses in April will be included in Alphabet's second-quarter expenses, allowing Alphabet to dilute operating expenses in its financial statements.

In response to employees' questions, Google management said that the year-end bonus paid in January was equivalent to a "down payment", but that this year's practice was only one-off in the transitional period, not all in the future. Google is considering adjusting its employee assessment system and revising the timing of future year-end bonuses.

In an open letter, Google said that after 2023, all year-end bonuses will be paid in March.

After the relevant news was exposed, a Google spokesman said that the practice of paying 80% of the year-end bonus in 2022 was explained to Google employees in May 2022 and in subsequent notices. this is actually part of Google's introduction of a new assessment management system and transition schedule.

The postponement of the year-end bonus is one of Google's chief executive Sandal Pichai's efforts to cut costs and increase efficiency.

Last week, Verily, Alphabet's health science subsidiary, announced that it would lay off 13 per cent of its employees, or about 240people. Intrinsic, another robotics subsidiary, has also laid off some of its redundant staff.

In the second half of last year, Google did not release the next generation of Pixelbook notebooks, cutting funding for the internal incubator division. Google also announced that it will shut down Stadia, a cloud gaming platform that allows players to play games running on large servers via video. Last September, Pichai also said that he would increase Google's operational efficiency by 20%.

While rectifying inefficient products, Google is also reforming the employee evaluation system. Us media reported last month that Google had released some details of the new assessment system, such as the possibility that more employees would suffer from low ratings in the future. Some Google employees worry that Google's new assessment system is actually reducing the size of its workforce without layoffs.

This year-end bonus is distributed in batches, which has also aroused the worries of some employees. Some employees told the media that they did not know there was such a thing and did not get much help when looking to management for answers.
