Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
January 20, a survey of 2300 game developers shows that game developers do not believe in meta-universe and do not believe in blockchain technology.
Although in the past year, people from all walks of life have been competing to promote the concept of meta-universe, game developers do not have this kind of enthusiasm for meta-universe. According to the Game developers Conference (GDC) report "the State of the Game Industry 2023", game developers do not believe in the prospects depicted by meta-universe, nor do they believe in blockchain technology.
To outsiders, the gaming industry is relatively opaque because employees are bound by company confidentiality agreements. And GDC surveys what game developers think every year. This year, 39% of respondents said they worked in an independent game studio, while 23% said they worked in a popular large game studio.
Among them, 14% of the respondents believe that the person most likely to fulfill the promise of meta-universe is Fortnite, developed by Epic Games. Meta and Minecraft each received 7 per cent of the vote. Roblox's share of the vote was even lower, at 5%. At the same time, 45% of respondents believe that "the concept of meta-universe will never live up to its promise."
The answer of one anonymous interviewee represents the general view of developers, explaining why there is such a doubt: "for now, the promise of a metamosmos is nothing." people who try to sell metasmos don't know what it is, and neither do consumers. Do you remember the cloud game ten years ago and what are you doing now? "
The survey organizers said in an interview that 45% of the respondents who were skeptical about meta-universe were not sure whether they also included employees who had to work related to meta-universe products.
"I don't think the data is that deep, but I personally want to know," said Alissa McAloon, Game Developer publisher and editorial director who co-authored the report.
Developers were also asked about blockchain technology, another controversial topic in the gaming industry. Only 2% of developers said they were already using blockchain technology, while 75% said they were not interested. When asked if their views on blockchain technology had changed within a year, 56% of respondents said they still disapproved of blockchain technology compared with a year ago.
Most respondents believe that integration trends such as Microsoft's desire to buy Activision Blizzard will have a negative impact on the gaming industry as a whole. Only 17% of respondents thought consolidation would benefit the industry, while 44% thought it would have a negative impact. "Big companies are getting bigger and bigger," wrote one anonymous interviewee. "the degree of homogenization is getting higher and higher. But there are fewer and fewer ideas. But I think the role of Banjo Bear can now appear in Guitar Hero."
The survey shows that support for trade unions throughout the game industry has remained stable. About 53% of the respondents thought that game workers should form a union, while 13% of the respondents thought it should not. The survey also asked game developers if they or their colleagues had discussed unionizing in the company, and 22% of the respondents replied that they had. Developers with 15 years or less experience are more likely to support unions than developers with 16 years or more experience. Game developers with more than 30 years of work experience are the least likely to support joining a union.
The survey shows that the gaming industry has also been affected by the wave of resignations. About 36% of game developers have considered changing careers, and 81% of them said they considered changing careers in order to earn more.
Developers were also asked if they had been harassed by players. 91% of respondents thought it was an old problem for players to harass developers.
"harassing developers by players is not a new problem in the industry," McClaren said. "but one of the trends we saw last year is that studios publicly support developers who have been harassed by players."
